Have a reading corner in the playground

At Ashmead Primary School in Lewisham, a health and safety concern turned into a book initiative: the new Head was worried about pupils using a slope covered in astroturf as an unofficial skidding hill – he re-designated it the Reading hill and every day at break times and lunch boxes of books are carried out by kids and left for others to browse… this has lead to both individual and group reading as children feel like it, and many older pupils choose to read with younger ones.
